Breakfree 2025
At Pathways we believe that together we can achieve a smokefree Aotearoa. Whānau play an important role in supporting the wellbeing of tāngata whai ora and taiohi.
Here are some helpful ideas on how you can support your loved one to stop smoking or vaping.
Let everyone know that your whare is smokefree. Smoke free environments are great for helping manage temptations. You may also want to consider displaying a smokefree sign to remind visitors.
When speaking to your loved one about their smoking or vaping:
- Ask them why they want to cut down or quit smoking or vaping. Then remind them of their reasons for quitting when it becomes tough.
- Encourage them, keep it positive and help them with noticing their achievements, especially when they may feel that they have failed.
- Help them find ways to cope or distract them when they seem to be struggling with cravings. Finding fun things to do can help them replace old habits with new positive ones.
- Ask them how you can best support them throughout this journey.
- Get involved with our Breakfree 2025 Stop-a-thon by supporting them along the way. If your loved one has not signed up yet, encourage them to talk to our kaimahi about signing up.
- Reach out to our kaimahi or a smokefree service in in your region for advice when you need to.
