Men’s mental wellbeing

Published: December 2, 2024

Men’s mental health is a growing concern in Aotearoa New Zealand. Many men delay seeking help, believing they need to “harden up” or handle things alone. At Pathways, we believe reaching out for support is not a sign of weakness but a powerful act of strength.

In 2023, 1 in 5 men reported poor wellbeing, and about 1 in 8 men will experience severe depression during their lifetime. Men are also three times more likely than women to die by suicide. These statistics highlight the importance of reducing stigma and creating safe spaces for men to seek support.

Factors affecting mental wellbeing

Mental wellbeing can be impacted by various factors, including:

  • Life changes like unemployment, divorce, or becoming a father.
  • Relationship or workplace challenges.
  • Financial pressures.
  • Poor physical health or injuries.
  • Addiction to substances such as drugs or alcohol.
  • Feeling isolated or lacking a trusted friend to talk to.

Recognising the signs

Depression:

  • Feeling persistently low, hopeless, or tired.
  • Losing interest in activities once enjoyed.
  • Difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or managing emotions.

Anxiety:

  • Racing thoughts, a racing heart, or difficulty breathing.
  • Persistent worry or compulsive behaviours.

If symptoms persist for more than two weeks or someone feels unsafe, it’s important to seek help.
